“Like lichen on stone, like bark on trees, we are woven together with time."

This short program performed by local Chicago singers will consist of contemporary music by Sami composer Frode Fjellheim, Mia Makaroff, Andrea Ramsey, and Sami musician Katarina Barruk. These pieces are in Latin, English, and North Sami, often switching from one to the other. They speak to the tumultuous relationship that the Lutheran Church has continued to hold with the Sami people since Lutheranization, a shadow that lingers over our history even today. The strength required to heal, make peace, and protect the culture for generations to come stems from courage, faith in the wisdom of our Ancestors, and a determination to tell the world that we are still here. These compositions celebrate and share Sami culture, and were chosen to compliment Mov Giele | My Voice, the exhibition of eight paintings by Sami artist Per Elof Nilsson Ricklund.
